Role Purpose:

Custody are looking for Sergeants across the force to apply to work within the Custody Suites. This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop skills in an extremely important area of policing and can offer the following benefits:

  1. In Custody Suites (Barnsley, Doncaster, Sheffield Shepcote Lane), officers work the 4 x 12 hour shift system.
  2. Custody Sergeant is a specialist role, which requires the ability to make sound decisions on a daily basis. You will have the opportunity to expand and develop your knowledge of PACE and custody procedures.
  3. It provides the opportunity to work in a challenging environment with a variety of different individuals.
  4. Once allocated a Custody Suite you will usually work from the same place of work on a daily basis.
  5. You will be able to support, influence and develop colleagues across the force, providing advice, guidance and challenge.
  6. You will develop and enhance your own leadership skills, working with Detention Officers, investigating officers and a range of partner agencies to ensure legal requirements are discharged and detainee welfare prioritised.
  7. You will be required to complete a Level 4 Certificate in Custody and Detention, which is a great opportunity to achieve a nationally recognised qualification.

Interviews will take place during w/c 29th November 2021.

Ideally, successful candidates will be available to attend the Custody Sergeant training course, scheduled to take place from 7th February until 2nd March 2022. However, further courses are likely to be run later in 2022 as vacancies arise.

There will be vacancies within Custody immediately after each of these courses, and additional future vacancies may occur over the next 12 months. Successful applicants will be posted according to preferences where possible. However, where this is not possible, opportunities for internal movements arise on a regular basis.

Key Accountabilities:

You will maintain standards of professional practice, work as part of a team and make best use of technology. 

You will also gather information to support action, provide specialist advice and knowledge and present evidence in court and other hearings.

You will lead your team in prioritising support for detainees and offering advice, guidance and support to investigators.

You must be able to work collaboratively with others.

South Yorkshire Police offer relocation and removal expenses up to a maximum of £8000 to transferring officers currently living outside of the force area and at least 50 miles from their permanent place of work.

To be eligible to transfer you must:

  • Be a current serving police officer in a Home Office force (Officers from British Transport Police, Police Service Northern Ireland, Police of Scotland & Ministry of Defence are assessed on a case by case basis).
  • Have no outstanding discipline or integrity issues.
  • Have resided in the UK for three years immediately prior to submitting your application.
  • Must have successfully completed your probationary period with your Force prior to submitting your application.
