The Development and Targeting team is responsible for:

  • Intelligence development using both overt and covert policing methods
  • Conducting lawful surveillance activities to support other departments/districts within the force.
  • Support departments/districts within the force providing effective solutions to operational requirements
  • Work with districts to dismantle OCG activity and reduce threat, risk and harm to the force
  • Collate and disseminate intelligence and evidence

You will investigate crime of a serious and complex nature, ensuring best evidence is obtained to assist in the process and securing conviction of offenders in accordance with relevant legislation and in line with the Police Code of Ethics. You will meet the objectives of the Police and Crime Plan and ensure communities are safer and feel safer.

We are looking for proactive crime-orientated Constables. The ideal candidate will display initiative and a proactive approach to the investigation and disruption of Organised Criminality. An acceptance of flexible working conditions in terms of working hours is essential for this role

Key Accountabilities:

  • On receipt of the relevant briefing information, collectively identify a plan of action to undertake the surveillance, developing intelligence using both covert and overt policing methods, in line with the set objectives.
  • Undertake covert surveillance as authorised under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, and Human Rights legislation support other departments/districts within the Force
  • Debrief covert surveillance operations on a daily basis, ensuring the evidential log is accurate
  • Liaise and work with other investigators, specialists and managers to establish and use appropriate methods for gathering material and to develop procedures to turn material into intelligence or evidence as part of the investigation into serious and complex investigations.
  • Identify and plan own investigative actions, taking into account resources, priorities, and proportionality to achieve investigatory objectives.
  • Officers perform the role of OIC, Exhibits Officer, Disclosure Officer and other investigative roles on various investigations. Ensure all material, including exhibits generated by serious and complex crime are seized, examined, and retained in accordance with legislation and policy, where necessary.
  • Interview witnesses and suspects and gather all required information, intelligence and evidence in relation to serious and complex investigations, also generating further lines of enquiry where required to bring offenders to justice.
  • Prepare reports on the outcome of investigations.
  • Build and manage case files and conduct disclosure within best practice procedures to ensure there is an accurate audit trail.

Skills and experience:

  • Attend and pass the Surveillance Pre-select course (2 days), Advanced Driving Course (4 weeks) and Q1 Surveillance Course (5 weeks and most likely residential)
  • Has attended National/Local Log and disclsosure course and exhibits course- Desirable
  • Professional Investigation Programme (PIP) 2 Investigator accreditation- Desirable
  • Demonstrable experience of complex information gathering and problem solving.
  • A detailed understanding of the criminal justice system.
  • Experience of managing investigations and understanding of covert methods of policing.
  • Knowledge and practical experience in the following areas is desirable OCG Management, Threat to life Guidelines, RIPA 2000, IPA 2016, Police Act 1997, EHRA 1998, CPIA 1996, Criminal Justice Act 2003 and other Disclosure Guidelines and Protocols.
  • Experience of maintaining a high level of confidentiality and managing issues of a sensitive nature are vital.
  • Must pass Management Vetting and Security Clearance vetting.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to listen, empathise, provide support and adapt language, form, and message to meet the needs of different people / audiences.
  • Skilled in the use of use IT packages, systems and/or databases to fulfil role requirements.

South Yorkshire Police offer relocation and removal expenses up to a maximum of £8000 to transferring officers currently living outside of the force area and at least 50 miles from their permanent place of work.

To be eligible to transfer you must:

  • Be a current serving police officer in a Home Office force (Officers from British Transport Police, Police Service Northern Ireland, Police of Scotland & Ministry of Defence are assessed on a case by case basis).
  • Have no outstanding discipline or integrity issues.
  • Have resided in the UK for three years immediately prior to submitting your application.
  • Must have successfully completed your probationary period with your Force prior to submitting your application.
