Applications are invited for the role of Road Crime Unit Constable.

Road Crime Unit (RCU) officers are pro-active and have a good working knowledge of the Force tasking process, crime trends, traffic legislation, national pursuit policies and resolution tactics and the national intelligence model.

Key areas of work include providing force-wide vehicle intercept capability, close links with the ANPR team and local intelligence cells, regional and national crime agencies and units, surveillance teams, regional road crime teams, participation in and leading on national road crime campaigns and links with other stakeholders. RCU officers provide cover and work on the strategic road network, provide support and assistance to local policing and to assist resilience support to RPG officers dealing with serious, life threatening and fatal collisions as and when required.

RCU Constables will provide:

  • Vehicle intercept capability, pursuit management and prevention, pro-active road crime intervention, volume and serious crime prevention and detection, stolen vehicle identification and criminal investigation processes.

All new RCU Constables MUST hold a valid TPAC qualification. Officers unable to maintain this qualification will be transferred to other roles within the force.

We are seeking applicants who are Detective status (or similar level of investigative background) and who must be able to demonstrate a high level of proactivity tackling of criminality, developing intelligence and high quality investigative capability, in addition to the above skills.

Experience:

  • Must have a broad base of policing knowledge and experience in order to undertake the role effectively
  • Advanced driving qualification must be held and maintained. Consistently high standards of driving must be maintained in order to set a good example and display appropriate driver behaviour to ensure safety and responsibility during pursuit, response and escort situations.
  • TPAC pursuit qualification must be held and maintained.
  • Good working knowledge of traffic and roads-based crime legislation and the ability to research and expand on knowledge relating to such matters as required.
  • Previous roads policing experience and/or investigation of volume crime including vehicles/ 2 in 1 burglaries.
  • An understanding of Force / Departmental objectives, showing commitment and motivation to ensure they are achieved.
  • Must be highly professional, motivated, committed and flexible ensuring the high standards expected of officers in the department are maintained.
  • Must have a proven ability to work as part of a team in a disciplined structured environment which requires great flexibility to ensure the Force can respond to dynamic, changing demand.
  • Must be competent in the use of force systems with a particular awareness of the use of intelligence and briefing systems . Must be trained and proficient in the use ANPR BOF and cleartone in-car systems.
  • An understanding and experience in the processes for dealing with traffic offences, including TORs, fixed penalty tickets, graduated fixed penalty notices, postal requisitions, educational/rehabilitation courses and referrals to other authorities (DVLA, LA licensing etc.) and understanding of when each method is appropriate
  • To be fast roads trained and competent in the Policing of the strategic Road network
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills to deal effectively with customers and promote a positive image of the department among colleagues, other agencies and members of the public.
  • Sound practical knowledge and experience of the requirement to develop partnerships, reciprocal arrangements and a joint-agency approach in the investigation of vehicle crime.
  • Sound understanding of the management of property in accordance to Force Policy and National guidelines ensuring that correct procedures are followed in the recovery, retention and disposal of vehicles.
  • Be trained and current in self-defence and first Aid.
  • Have an excellent working knowledge of relevant Force policies particularly the RTC Policy, Pursuit Policy, Police Vehicle Collision Policy and Police Driver’s policy.

Essential Criteria:

  • Current OSU RPG Officer
  • Maintain a suitable level of fitness and skill to undertake the role
  • Must hold and maintain a full car driving licence
  • Must hold and maintain a police advanced driving permit and TPAC
  • Undertake and achieve:
    • 1st aid training
    • Regular CPD training
    • Standard fitness test
