We have an exciting opportunity for an Investigating Officer who is PIP 2 qualified to join our Armed Crime Team.

The Armed Crime Team is South Yorkshire Police’s response to the threat posed by gun crime. The Armed Crime Team has expanded to have force wide responsibility to investigate OCG firearms discharges and disrupt and dismantle firearms enabled OCG’s through Pro-Active operations and reactive investigations. The majority of these discharges are driven by the activity of OCGs involved in the supply of controlled drugs.

The Armed Crime Team deliver an enhanced force wide intelligence, investigative and disruption capability and to work effectively with partner agencies in order to tackle firearms enabled organised crime groups that pose the greatest threat of harm to the communities of South Yorkshire.

The successful candidate will have experience of managing investigations and will be expected to perform a range of challenging and rewarding roles including OIC, Exhibits Officer, Disclosure Officer and other investigative roles on various investigations. Development opportunities will be identified within the workplace in these areas.

Key responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Being part of a team investigating OCG related firearms discharges
  • Working closely with district proactive teams to target OCG’s
  • Collecting and gathering material, intelligence and evidence
  • Building and managing case files
  • Interviewing witnesses and suspects
  • Providing appropriate support for victims
  • Responding to safeguarding concerns and managing risk

Skills and experience:

  • Demonstrable experience of complex information gathering and problem solving.
  • A detailed understanding of the Criminal Justice System.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to listen, empathise, provide support and adapt language, form, and message to meet the needs of different people / audiences.
  • Flexibility in working hours to accommodate executing warrants & arresting suspects.
  • Skilled in the use of IT packages, systems and/or databases to fulfil role requirements.
  • Able to break down a complex problem into component parts and determine appropriate action in investigations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team to achieve shared objectives, demonstrating awareness of individual differences and providing support and advice as required.
  • Able to plan own work and plan ahead, as well as identify and mitigate risks.
  • Able to produce clear and concise reports and other documents within best practice procedures.
  • Have knowledge of NABIS processes, centred around forensic submissions and the movement of exhibits.

Eligibility:

Applicants must meet the minimum requirement checkable history criteria, which must be taken into account for individuals applying to work with South Yorkshire Police in any capacity. A minimum checkable history of 5 years is required for this role and successfully undergoing recruitment vetting procedure is a pre-requisite of employment with South Yorkshire Police.
