Inspector Promotion Process

If you have the drive, the vision and qualities to become an Inspector at South Yorkshire Police, we want to hear from you. The force is seeking applications from substantive Sergeants to assist in our quest to be the best and ensure the force continues to improve, delivering the highest quality service for members of the public.

About the role

Substantive Inspectors from external forces can also apply for this process as a transferee.

The person who takes up this role as Inspector will play an intrinsic part in ensuring the public receives the very best service from us, by working proactively and collaboratively with colleagues. It’s essential that the successful candidate will hold the highest levels of operational credibility and will:

  • Lead and inspire staff, engaging with them and implementing change effectively
  • Have operational credibility, with experience of leading a range of policing services
  • Connect with officers, staff and key stakeholders at all levels to effectively deliver excellent and high quality policing to the public of South Yorkshire
  • Be able to drive, improve and deliver performance outcomes and have substantial evidence of this
  • Be truly committed and passionate about the service provided to the public of South Yorkshire

Requirements / Criteria

Have successfully passed your probation period in your existing rank

NPPF Step 2 Inspector Legal exam qualified (previously OSPRE part 1) (valid within the last 5 years as of the promotion board selection date) OR OSPRE Part 1 and 2 qualified (no time limit)

Application process

The application process will open on Tuesday 3rd April 2018 and the Competency and Values Framework (CVF) will be used as the basis for the assessment.

The process will comprise of:

  • An application form requiring evidence in the 4 CVF value areas
  • A work sample assessment (via presentation) and interview

Application forms must be returned by 0900 Monday 23rd April

The preparation workshop will be held at South Yorkshire Police Training Centre, Robert Dyson House,  Unit 5, Doncaster Road, Wath Upon Dearne, S63 7EF on 29th March 2018 09.00-11.00 or 6th April 2018 09.00-11.00.
