Role Purpose:

Deal with requests for information in accordance with the Data Protection Act and Freedom of Information Act and maintain the integrity of South Yorkshire Police systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out audits of all South Yorkshire Police Information Systems.
  • Assist in the preparation of detailed reports on above audits for the attention of the Deputy Chief Constable, District Commanders and in making recommendations on Force procedures in relation to those matters covered in the audit report.
  • Process applications under the provisions of the Data Protection Act and the Freedom of Information Act, including complex decision-making and, where necessary, assist with the processing of internal reviews.
  • Regularly negotiate with members of the public over the telephone in order to clarify requests for information and ensure that the Unit operates efficiently but with a customer focus
  • Advise the Force and members of the public on all aspects of the Data Protection and Freedom of Information Acts, both face to face and over the telephone.
  • Develop and maintain an awareness of Data Protection, Freedom of Information and information security issues .
  • Research and prepare documentation covering all aspects of the unit’s remit.

Any other duties commensurate with the responsibility of the role.


Skills and experience:

  • Awareness of Data Protection and Freedom of Information legislation, and information security issues.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office software packages (Word, Excel, Access).
  • Ability to travel throughout the Force area.
