This is an excellent opportunity for a suitably qualified solicitor/barrister or FILEX to provide legal advice and representation to the Chief Constable in civil claims involving South Yorkshire Police and Humberside Police.

You will work as part of a team that provides a comprehensive range of legal advice and representation to the Chief Constable but in the main, you will deal with civil claims for predominantly Malfeasance and Personal Injury litigation (RTA/EL/PL) and all other related civil proceedings involving the Chief Constable.

Accordingly, you must demonstrate strong civil litigation skills with the ability to provide supervision and guidance to the civil litigation team.

The post holder will be based at Force HQ at Carbrook, Sheffield but will need to be flexible to travel and attend at other locations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Force Solicitor in the management and conduct of civil claims for predominantly malfeasance and Personal Injury litigation (RTA/EL/PL) and all other related civil proceedings involving the Chief Constable.
  • Advise upon and negotiate settlement in such civil cases where appropriate.
  • Provide legal advice or representation in matters before Tribunals and Courts to ensure that the Chief Constable and the South Yorkshire Police and Humberside Police are properly represented in such cases.
  • Advise on any aspect of the law specifically relating to litigation within the Police Service including the implication of legislative changes and the adoption of new training and policies.
  • Ensure that all civil claims within the department are adequately recorded and reported in accordance with both the internal financial and external insurance procedures.
  • Advise on matters relating to the disclosure of information in predominantly civil proceedings and, on occasion, criminal proceedings including public interest immunity and confidentiality ensuring compliance with legislation, Case Law and Force Policy.
  • Attend or chair meetings where necessary to represent the Legal Services Department and Chief Constable.
  • Provide supervision and guidance to the civil litigation team and when required, quality assure their work.
