The role of Detention Officer involves weekend working and attracts a shift allowance of 20% to reflect the requirement to work 24 hours shifts. The current rota is four 12 hr shifts on then four days off. The shift pattern is two 7amx7pm shifts followed by two 7pmx7am shifts (note the working hours are subject to future change). As these are projected vacancies, the exact rota the new staff will work may differ from this pattern.

 

This advert is for projected vacancies and successful applicants will be offered posts at either Sheffield (Shepcote Lane), Doncaster or Barnsley custody suites, however once appointed there may be occasional requirement to work at alternative suites if staffing levels dictate.


The successful candidate must be able to undertake personal safety training, first aid training and work 24 hour shifts. They must also be able to attend the initial training course commencing 2nd September 2019 for 4 weeks.

 

A brief outline of day-to-day duties/responsibilities of the post holder:

 

  • Whilst in the Custody Suite, responsible for the security, safety, property and that the welfare needs of the detained persons are catered for.
  • To ensure that detained persons are treated in accordance with the codes of practice issued under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984
  • Responsible for the undertaking of periodic safety checks of detained persons as directed by the Custody Officer (in accordance with Pace moving detained persons under influence of drink/drugs etc.). To record all relevant information in the appropriate custody record.
  • When instructed by Custody Sergeant undertake the necessary process to book detainee into Custody. Responsible for undertaking dynamic risk assessments and appropriate use of IT to input information onto the custody handling system.
  • Responsible for the taking of Viper ID Captures, fingerprints, photographs and DNA from detained persons as directed by the Custody Officer.
  • To conduct Drug testing of detained persons as directed by the Custody Officer and to complete the associated administrative procedures.
  • To restrain any detained person to prevent injury to the detainee, Police Officer or any other person and to prevent escape or unlawful damage to property.
  • To administer First Aid immediately when required and to inform the Custody Officer immediately if any detained person suffers any injury or illness and record observations on the Custody Handling system.
  • To arrange for the issuing of medication to detained persons prescribed by the medical practitioner under the direction of the Custody Officer.
  • To arrange the fumigation or laundering of dirty bedding to maintain high standards of hygiene.
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety guidance, including maintenance and survey the exercise yard to ensure there are no articles that may cause detainees injury.
  • Ensure compliance with the meet and greet policy of uniformed officers bringing detainees into the suite.
  • Applicants must have good communication skills in order to effectively communicate in person, by phone and intercom with detainees, officers, solicitors and other partners.
