Role Purpose:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a digital forensic analyst post within South Yorkshire Police’s Digital Forensic Unit. This role is suitable for graduates with little/no experience and experienced examiners alike due to the roles being part of a career development programme. Any previous experience will be assessed to determine where on the programme individuals are placed.

The Digital Forensics Unit are involved in investigating all types of crime, supporting Force wide Districts and departments.  Under the guidance of a Senior Digital Forensic Analyst, you will use forensic techniques and tools to identify and acquire evidence and intelligence held on digital devices. You will analyze data using appropriate forensic techniques and produce streamlined forensic reports for use in court. Additionally, you will provide advice and technical support to operational officers during proactive operations, investigations and warrants.

You will be expected to work within a forensic environment that adheres to ISO 17025 standards, working to technical procedures and a quality management system. You will work closely with the other members of the department and assist officers in the creation of Digital Media Investigation strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Secure and retrieve data from laptop/computers, mobile devices and their peripheral items such as pen drives, memory cards and digital cameras, in accordance with national guidelines, utilising proprietary and bespoke software.
  • Process the recovered data into a form suitable for investigations to examine for evidential content.
  • Examine the processed data in accordance with best practice and produce resulting information in a form that can be readily understood and evaluated.
  • As part of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement give presentations and briefings as appropriate, in order to fully support investigations, including providing awareness practical advice and guidance to officers on matters relating to Digital Media Investigations.
  • Liaise on a regular basis with colleagues in other Law Enforcement Agencies in order to share and learn from best practice.
  • As directed by line manager and/or DFU Supervisor, research, test and where appropriate recommend the implementation of new products/techniques within the industry.
  • Develop and maintain specialised and up to date technical knowledge of both mobile and forensic computer procedures, keeping abreast of developments within the computer industry in order to secure the success of future investigations and to develop the unit.
  • Bring any inefficient processes to the attention of the DFU Supervisor and assist with the development of any solutions.
  • Use the Digital Forensics case management system to record processes, contact with officers and examinations conducted.
  • Work closely with the other members of the Hi Tech Crime Unit to ensure effective knowledge sharing across the department and assist officers in the creation of Digital Media Investigation strategies.
  • Support the Digital Media Co-Coordinator and Digital Media Investigators across the Force.
  • Conduct other associated tasks that are considered appropriate given the rapid changes in technology and the amendment of practices to take these into account.
