The Occupational Health Advisor role predominantly involves undertaking fitness for work assessments and pre-employment screening, liaising with the Occupational Health Physician where necessary, providing evidence based reports to support the employee and management to achieve a successful and sustained return to work. There is an expectation that the OHA will provide support with health surveillance, safety critical medicals, contamination injury management involving vaccination and venepuncture. Full training/refresher training will be provided in these areas where necessary.

Part of your duties will be supporting other members of the team in the delivery of an effective and efficient customer-focused service in compliance with legislation, and relevant guidance. You will report to the senior occupational health advisor and work as part of a team to improve service provision standards of health and wellbeing to support force objectives and work towards the achieving the foundation occupational health standards for police forces and the acquisition of SEQOHS accreditation.

To be considered, you must be NMC registered RGN with a qualification in occupational health nursing (Degree or Diploma), you must be experienced in report writing and with complex case management and have the ability to manage a challenging workload to support future OH plans.  Ideally, you will be experienced in spirometry, audiometry, the administration of vaccinations and venepuncture and have experience of working in a police environment. In addition, you should have the ability to travel within South Yorkshire to deliver an agile OH Service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct face to face and telephone consultations maintaining clinical objectivity and impartiality at all times in line with occupational health guidance
  • Produce concise written reports to management indicating an employee’s fitness to work, advising on adjustments and providing timescales.
  • Undertake case management of complex cases liaising with the Occupational Health Physician where necessary and providing appropriate and effective evidence-based advice to support the employee and management
  • Utilise a bio-psychosocial approach combined with functional assessment to address barriers to work and inform robust work recommendations
  • Be able to interpret legislation, policies and procedures to support effective return to work plans
  • Deliver OH services which complies with confidentiality and codes of professional practice
  • Undertake vaccination programmes and advise on infection control issues
  • Sensitively and effectively manage contamination incidents
  • Undertake pre-employment screenings by assessing and advising on fitness for work and providing details of workplace adjustments for managers to consider
  • Provide advice on improving individual health and wellbeing and signpost to relevant external agencies and charities to help individuals access support and make lifestyle changes.
  • Participate in regular clinical audit to generate continuous service improvements in quality and assist in the preparation for SEQOHS accreditation

Skills and experience:

  • Occupational Health Degree or Diploma
  • Postgraduate OH case management experience and currently in practice or significant experience in OH practice as a case manager
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
  • Current registration with NMC
  • Ability to travel throughout the Force Area

Eligibility:

Applicants must meet the minimum requirement checkable history criteria, which must be taken into account for individuals applying to work with South Yorkshire Police in any capacity. A minimum checkable history of 5 years is required for this role and successfully undergoing recruitment vetting procedure is a pre-requisite of employment with South Yorkshire Police.
