Contract Type: Fixed term for 18 months

Role Purpose:

The Occupational Health nurse resides within the Wellbeing Team and is critical to the core function of the overall wellbeing service. The Occupational Health Nurse role is required to deliver a range of OH services to SYP, involving, pre-employment assessments, police officer recruit pre-employment screening, fitness for work medicals, vaccinations, management of contamination incidents, statutory health surveillance and other services as required. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the OH nurse will be able to provide advice to individuals and their managers appropriately so that risks are properly managed and to signpost individuals to the support they need to ensure ongoing medical fitness for the specialist roles they are employed to undertake.

Key responsibilities include the following:

  • With supervision and support deliver pre-employment medicals and mandatory medicals for police officers and staff and be responsible for liaising with other areas of the force to ensure periodic medicals are undertaken within agreed timescales to maintain frontline operational policing.
  • Under the supervision of an OHA, deliver health surveillance programmes, being competent in spirometry, audiometry and immunisations and venepuncture.
  • Under the supervision of an OHA demonstrate good understanding and practical application of relevant health and safety regulations associated with noise, HAVS, lead and occupational asthma and know when to escalate cases of concern.
  • Under the supervision of an OHA, be able to interpret legislation, policies and procedures to meet SYP requirements for OH provision
  • Assist in protecting the health of South Yorkshire Police officers and staff by undertaking hepatitis B immunisations and carrying out venepuncture as part of the duties pertaining to delivering a vaccination schedule.


Skills and experience:

  • Qualified Registered General Nurse
  • Experience in delivery of immunisations, and venepuncture
  • Experience and competence in audiometry and spirometry is preferable, but not essential as training can be provided.
  • Ability to manage a challenging workload
  • Thorough understanding and application of professional regulatory frameworks, and adherence to confidentiality and appropriate use of data

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must meet the minimum requirement checkable history criteria, which must be taken into account for individuals applying to work with South Yorkshire Police in any capacity. A minimum checkable history of 5 years is required for this role and successfully undergoing recruitment vetting procedure is a pre-requisite of employment with South Yorkshire Police.
