As part of a dedicated team, you will be the first point of contact for members of the public in South Yorkshire, dealing with a wide range of emergency 999 and non-emergency 101 contacts, ensuring the right action is taken to meet the needs of the public.  No two calls are ever quite the same – one minute you could be noting down the details of a stolen vehicle, the next, you might be taking a report of a sudden death.  Whatever the situation, we always strive to provide the highest quality of service to our customers.

As a member of the team, you will be at the centre of policing in South Yorkshire and will find yourself dealing with incidents that most people will not come across in their lifetime.  You will encounter distressing situations, life-threatening situations and very sad situations.  However, it is a hugely rewarding job where no two days are alike and you will feel an immense sense of satisfaction knowing you have helped someone at one of the worst times of their life.  There will also be routine jobs to deal with such as administration tasks associated with the role.

You’ll be part of the wider policing family helping to keep South Yorkshire safe as well as part of a team of great people.  Most people join the police service because they want to help others and make a difference to people’s lives.  Working in the Force Contact Resolution Unit, there is no doubt that you will be making a difference – every day.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage emergency and non-emergency telephone communication to the Force, both from the public and other emergency services
  • Ensuring the accurate recording and passing of incident information
  • Operate and respond to contact from the public

 Skills and experience:

  • Experience in working within a communications environment
  • Have excellent problem solving, communication and decision-making skills
  • Be computer literate
  • Must be prepared to be work a combination of days and afternoons, including weekend working
  • Ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure

Further Information:

You will be based on Atlas Court, Sheffield which is located 5 minutes from Sheffield City Centre and Meadowhall.

A variety of working hours are available including full time and part time hours working a mixture of shifts, which can attract a shift allowance and weekend working allowance.

You must be prepared to work shifts and bank holidays with the service operating 24/7, 365 days of the year.

Working a 24/7 shift pattern, full time or part time, attracts a salary of £18,123 - £19,719 (pro rata part time) and 20% shift allowance and weekend working taking the total pay to approximately £24,000 (pro rata part time).

Working a shift pattern which spans between 08.00 x 22.00, attracts a salary of £18,123 - £19,719 (pro rata part time) and 12.5% shift allowance and weekend working, taking the total pay to approximately £22,900 (pro rata part time).

Please note the current shift pattern is under review.

You will be expected to work full time Monday to Friday for the first 11 weeks during training.  We have two course dates scheduled; Monday, 21 January 2019 and 01 April 2019. Successful applicants will be allocated to a course as and when all pre-employment checks are complete. 

Applicants must meet the minimum requirement checkable history criteria, which must be taken into account for individuals applying to work with South Yorkshire Police & Humberside Police in any capacity.  A minimum checkable history of 3 years has been identified for this role and successfully undergoing recruitment vetting procedure is a pre-requisite of employment with South Yorkshire Police.

Closing dates are not normally extended, other than in exceptional circumstances and agreement is made with the HR Manager, Recruitment and the Line Manager for the role.
