Contract Type: Secondment – approximately 6 months
The successful applicant should possess a reasonably strong disposition, as there may be occasional visual contact with deceased persons, including during Post Mortem examinations.
It is essential that you have a sympathetic mature constitution, together with interpersonal skills of the highest order, as you will deal with tragic deaths of persons ageing from infancy.
As a Senior Coroner’s Officer, you will supervise a team of Coroners Officers (Support Staff), supporting their development, conducting all PDR’s and managing all their welfare needs.
You are required to provide an evening and weekend on-call service to offer advice to officers and partner agencies. This will be on a rota basis, and will be approximately 5 times per annum for a week at a time, including duty on some Bank Holidays.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deal with administrative tasks associated with the receipt of notifications of deaths to the Coroner, initial enquiries, facilitating arrangements for post mortems as directed by HM Coroner. This will involve liaising with various agencies e.g. Police, the Registrar, Hospitals, GPs, etc.
- Enquiries to be made regarding the deceased person as directed by HM Coroner, including file/case building and the occasional taking of statements for the court.
- Assist in the preparation and vetting of statutory disclosure for the inquest process.
- Occasional management of court hearings when required by the Coroner.
- Develop a strategy for the day-to-day running of the Coroner’s Offices.
- Identify opportunities to continuous service improvement.
Skills and experience:
- Good understanding of medical terminology and procedures e.g. Coroner’s Officer, Paramedic.
- Must have substantial supervisory experience.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to work long hours at short notice.
- Must possess a strong disposition
- An ability to communicate at all levels including preparing high quality reports
- Must possess good attention to detail
- Must have own transport and be able to travel to different locations

Eligibility:
Applicants must meet the minimum requirement checkable history criteria, which must be taken into account for individuals applying to work with South Yorkshire Police in any capacity. A minimum checkable history of 5 years is required for this role and successfully undergoing recruitment vetting procedure is a pre-requisite of employment with South Yorkshire Police.
