Role: Coroner’s Listing Officer

Salary: Band B

Hours: 37 per week

Role Purpose:

On behalf of the force and in liaison with staff within HM Coroner’s office, to undertake duties in connection with the investigation of sudden or suspicious deaths

Key Responsibilities:

  • Due to the nature of this role you will need possess a strong disposition, together with excellent communication skills.
  • May need to work outside normal working hours in order to meet organisational requirements
  • At short notice, be able to fulfil the role of court usher when required
  • Co-ordinate the listing of inquests as directed by HM Coroner in accordance with appropriate legislation, force policy and guidelines.
  • Prioritise and oversee the diary management of the Coroner’s Court to maximise its effective use.
  • Regular phone and written contact with bereaved families, Police, witnesses, legal and medical professionals and other agencies.
  • Assist Coroners Officer’s by attending Pre-Inquest Reviews and take notes in court, following up any actions directed by HM Coroner regarding the investigation relating to a deceased person, obtaining reports, information and evidence to contribute to both the investigation and preparation of the file for the inquest within given time constraints.
  • Administrative tasks associated with the enquiries and inquest into a deceased person, assisting with collation, disclosure and organisation of copious records and documents
  • Dealing with enquiries from the general public, press and other agencies.
  • Ensure accurate updating of paper and electronic records relating to the investigations and inquests of deceased persons.
  • Assist the Coroner’s Officers in identifying and following up outstanding enquiries relating to a deceased person within given timescales.
  • Meet and greet people arriving at court

Eligibility:

Applicants must meet the minimum requirement checkable history criteria, which must be taken into account for individuals applying to work with South Yorkshire Police in any capacity. A minimum checkable history of 3 years is required for this role and successfully undergoing recruitment vetting procedure is a pre-requisite of employment with South Yorkshire Police.
