Contract Type: Maternity Cover – nine months

If you are an experienced communicator looking for an exciting new challenge, this could be the role for you.

We currently have a vacancy for a Communications Officer to join the team at South Yorkshire Police, to cover maternity leave. The role can be based in South Yorkshire or remotely.

We need an enthusiastic, hard-working professional to join our busy news desk, where you will handle media enquiries, support our officers’ investigations with proactive appeals and engage with the public via our digital channels.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work behind the scenes on police stories which make the headlines here in South Yorkshire and nationally. You will also be making a difference - the appeals you draft and issue will help to solve crimes, trace wanted individuals and get missing people home to their loved ones.

News desk shifts cover our press office opening hours of 7am to 6pm. You will also join our out-of-hours on-call rota, which comes with a generous remuneration package including standby allowance, overtime payments and time in lieu.

To secure this role, you will have demonstrable experience in communications or an impressive transferable skillset from another sector such as PR or journalism. Experience of working with or in local or national media is preferred and you must have an understanding of media law. You will be able to work to tight deadlines, manage a varied workload and thrive under pressure.

The successful candidate will be joining a very personable and supportive team with colleagues from a range of backgrounds including journalism, community engagement, design, PR and public sector communications.

Applicants must meet the minimum checkable history criteria, which must be taken into account for all individuals applying to work with South Yorkshire Police in any capacity. A minimum checkable history period of three years has been identified for this role and successfully undergoing recruitment vetting procedure is a pre-requisite of employment with South Yorkshire Police.
