Applications are sought for the post of Detective Sergeant within the South Yorkshire Police, Internet Sexual Offences Team (ISOT).

This is an opportunity to work within a dynamic department, within Specialist Crime Services (SCS), where you will be instrumental in leading a team to identify and prosecute offenders responsible for committing online child abuse offences, in addition to identifying victims of such offences.  

You will prioritise activity around risk and supervise investigations which involves the execution of warrants, apprehension of suspects, examination of devices by the Digital Forensic Unit and the submission of case files to the CPS.

The team frequently work in partnership with regional teams, who utilise under cover profiles, to identify offenders, who pose significant risk to children and bring these offenders to justice, across the whole of the force area within South Yorkshire. 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide specialist support to assist team members in the investigation of investigation within the ISOT team. 
  • Evaluate in detail all intelligence and investigation packages produced.  Identify reasonable, necessary, and appropriate lines of enquiry, documenting these using the connect case management system in the form of investigation plans and thrive assessments taking into account resources, priorities, and proportionality to achieve investigatory objectives.
  • Provide knowledge and support in relation to multi –agency working, making appropriate referrals to children’s/adults services, LAO and Notifiable.  Attending contributing to strategy discussions when appropriate.
  • Inspire, coach, and lead a team of investigators so that they are motivated to perform at their best in the investigation of crime.
  • Supervise a team, managing their wellbeing, welfare, development. Devising and implementing effective strategies to identify issues and improve team and/or individual performance to maintain professional standards and contribute to the achievement of unit/Force objectives.
  • Co-ordinate and control the investigative responses of their team, allocating resources and directing activities and appropriately managing risks and monitoring progress within ongoing investigations.
  • Supervise, and where necessary conduct, interviews with witnesses and suspects within relevant PIP standards and gather all required evidence and information in within the criminal law and the legal framework to bring offenders to justice.
  • Identify opportunities for and co-ordinate the exploration of new ways of working and innovation in policing, applying critical thinking to identify solutions to problems in line with evidence based practice within the field of serious and complex investigations.
  • Use relevant powers to arrest and apprehend where necessary and issue special warnings, as well as carry out associated search and custody procedures to protect and safeguard the public in accordance with legislation and policy.
  • Provide appropriate supervision of the collection and gathering of evidence, ensuring that processes are in place for the recording and retention of material from a range of sources (such as serious crime reports) in a format that is evidentially admissible to support the investigative process.
  • Co-ordinate and work with other investigators and managers to establish and use appropriate methods for gathering material and to develop strong procedures relating to turning intelligence into evidence.
  • Support and supervise the analysis and assessment of evidence, evaluating materials generated by the investigation of crimes to identify offenders.
  • Ensure all material, including exhibits, are seized, examined and retained in accordance with legislation and policy, where necessary.
  • Support the preparation of reports on the outcome of investigations and the management of case files and disclosure within best practice procedures to ensure there is an accurate audit trail.

Skills and experience:

  • Professionalising Investigation Programme (PIP) Level 2 accredited
  • Ability to effectively manage risk and prioritise and direct policing activities to protect the most vulnerable.
  • Ability to provide a high level of support to team members around their welfare and wellbeing and ensure that where appropriate they are suitability sign posted or referred to relevant support services.
  • Awareness of current technological trends. Understanding of process of digital forensic examination to assist investigations.
  • Flexibility in working hours to accommodate executing warrants & arresting suspects.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to listen, empathise, provide support and adapt language, form, and message to meet the needs of different people / audiences.
  • Skilled in the use of use IT packages, systems and/or databases to fulfil role requirements.
  • Able to break down a complex problem into component parts and determine appropriate investigative direction.
  • Ability to effectively lead a team to achieve operational objectives.
  • Able to review own performance objectively and to develop and follow an appropriate improvement plan.
  • Able to proactively develop effective working relationships with colleagues, partners and other stakeholders.
  • Able to produce clear and concise reports and other documents where required.
