Our Dog Support Unit is looking for pro-active officers who are experienced Police General Purpose Dog Handlers who have a sound understanding Police Dog Training Principles, the 2011 Police Dog Training and Care Manual of Guidance and the National Decision-Making model (NDM).

The key areas of work include, providing specialist capability and advice for Police Dog deployments, including crime scenes, Firearms Support, searches and Public Order situations. Dog Handlers assist local policing by providing targeted pro-active patrols in crime hotspot areas to prevent violent offences and disrupt criminal activity.

To be eligible to apply you must currently be or have been a qualified Police Dog Handler at a Home Office Police Force.

Applicants must also achieve and maintain level 6.3 on the force fitness test.

All new Dog Handler constables will be expected to complete further training in one or more of the following areas – Advanced driver, Specialist Search Dog, Firearms Support Dog, PSU Dog Support.

South Yorkshire Police offer relocation and removal expenses up to a maximum of £8000 to transferring officers currently living outside of the force area and at least 50 miles from their permanent place of work.

To be eligible to transfer you must:

  • Be a current serving police officer in a Home Office force (Officers from British Transport Police, Police Service Northern Ireland, Police of Scotland & Ministry of Defence are assessed on a case by case basis).
  • Have no outstanding discipline or integrity issues.
  • Have resided in the UK for three years immediately prior to submitting your application.
  • Must have successfully completed your probationary period with your Force prior to submitting your application.
  • Pass a Practical and theory assessment at the South Yorkshire Police Dog Training School.
