Hours:  18.5 Per week (Part Time) Office Based

Contract: Permanent


As a Firearms Licensing & Explosives Officer, you undertake all necessary enquires relating to the issue and renewal of firearms/Shotgun/Explosive certificates in line with the force procedures and current legislation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring that risks to the Force, which may affect its ability to provide business as usual now or in the future are identified and escalated to their line manager or local Risk Champion at the earliest opportunity.
  • Authorising the issue or renewal of explosive licenses, this also includes the signing of explosive license prior to issue.
  • Conducts training of police officers etc in Firearms/Shotgun/Explosive Enquiries.
  • Prepares detailed suitability reports following visits to applicants for firearms/shotgun certificates, to include an assessment and recommendation for action and submit report to Firearms Licensing Manager.
  • Undertakes research projects relating to firearms and explosives, making appropriate recommendations in a written format. Actively seeks out alternative ways for the use of the trained firearms personnel, liaising with relevant parties to develop new practices and procedures.

What the role requires:

  • Prepared to attend and pass the ‘Explosive Foundation Course’.
  • Educated to GCSE standard or equivalent.
  • Well developed oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to liaise with people at all levels both internal/external to the force. #
  • Ability to make day to day decisions on Firearms/Explosives in accordance with the relevant policy procedures and legislation.

Pre – Employment Checks and Eligibility:

  • Internal applicants MUST have completed a successful 6 month probationary period and tenure (if applicable) before applying for another role within the force.
