Sergeant Promotion Process

April 2024

The process will be open to internal and external candidates.

Prior to completing an application you should have discussed whether you will be supported with your Commander.

Before progressing with your application you should arrange to meet with your line  management to hold a professional discussion about your intention to apply and your readiness for promotion to include feedback about your performance.

Throughout the process, the assessors will uphold the Force Standards and Code of Ethics. We expect all candidates to do the same. This is essential to the credibility of the process.

The process will comprise of the following two stages:

Stage One: Application form

  • Candidates will access an application form and a copy of the Manual of Guidance (Attached).
  • The Manual of Guidance will include a presentation question for candidates to deliver their answer in presentation format on the day of Assessment
  • Candidates are required to submit an application form including their current ‘live’ PDR and their last completed PDR containing CPD objectives to their Command (Internal candidates) by 0900 on 24th April 2024 or to Recruitment (External Candidates) for endorsement by 0900 on 26th April 2024.
  • The endorsement will consist of 2 options: Supported or Not Supported
  • Supported candidates will progress to Stage 2
  • Unsupported candidates must have a clear development plan in place in their PDR and be provided with written rationale as to why they have not been supported

Stage Two (A): Pre-prepared Presentation

The Manual of Guidance will include a pre-prepared presentation to deliver on the day.  This can be in either a powerpoint presentation or note format.  Candidates will need to submit any presentations by 1200 the working day prior to their board. If Candidates wish to present via flipchart, they must prepare it prior and bring on the day.

Stage Two (B): Interview

This stage will assess candidates against the CVF.  Full details of the process will be provided at the preparation workshops, where we will provide an overview of the requirement of the rank and detail the steps of the process.  This will be supplemented by a Manual of guidance published with the application form that provides all relevant information.
