A number of exciting opportunities have arisen to become a Tactical Flight Officer (TFO) with the National Police Air Service (NPAS). NPAS provides air support operations to 44 police forces across England and Wales, including British Transport Police. The service is delivered from 14 helicopter bases nationally by teams of 17 or more pilot and TFO staff providing 24/7 cover at each base.

The role requires a high degree of self-motivation aand critical decision-making in this dynamic tactical environment. With the role spanning both operational policing and aviation; individuals will be expected to demonstrate aptitude in both domains as well as the ability to navigate, operate specialist role equipment, and communicate effectively under pressure to a variety of end users.

As part of the selection process, officers will be required to pass the NPAS Initial Recruitment Testing battery which includes multitasking, spatial/situational awareness testing and map reading/interpretation exercises, as well as being able to interpret geographical and physical features from the air and relate them to the mapping and vice versa. Those successful at this stage will be forwarded to the Officer and Aircrew Selection Centre RAF Cranwell for cognitive skills assessment (Aptitude testing) with specifically designed tests around the role of Tactical Flight Officer. These examine a candidates innate abilities such areas as strategic task management, short term memory and capacity, and psychomotor skills. A competency based interview will then take place followed by a flight assessment in an NPAS aircraft.

Once selected, and prior to secondment, it is an essential requirement that officers pass the Tactical Flight Officer’s Course which is structured to include a number of assessment checks on the way to qualification. This CAA-required course includes such elements as ground safety, safe operations around Police aircraft and the aviation environment, navigation, using aviation charts and street atlases around specific task locations; both pre planned locations and ad hoc. Other elements include fire training, crew resource management, and technical equipment training. This culminates in a final assessment of suitability to continue to onto secondment and operation of police aircraft role equipment on both simulated and live tasking.

In addition, on appointment you must be able to swim competently, have the ability to complete the Job Related Fitness Test (JRFT) to level 6:4 or above and have a flexible approach to work working over a 24 hour period in 12-hour shifts. Officers will also need to achieve and maintain the TFO medical standard.
