An opportunity has arisen for a dedicated Police Constable to join the Dog Section, within our Specialist Operations Unit. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to work in a unique section, supporting every department in the Force, at the front line of Policing, with your canine friend by your side.

The overall purpose of this vital role is to maintain high visibility policing, and provide a response to calls for service in order to prevent or detect offences, preserve life, keep the peace and enhance the quality of life of the community.

The post holder will be required to care for the welfare of the dog on a 24 hr basis. The Dog, although retained as an asset by the Force, will reside with the post holder and the post holder is responsible for transporting the Dog to and from the reporting station. For this, you will be provided with a Dog van, and the relevant allowances.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Handle a General Purpose dog to support divisional Officers/SOU in providing a less than lethal option. This will involve often attending very volatile situations including firearm incidents.
  • Commitment to ensuring the GP dog is well cared for and their welfare is paramount
  • Attends and preserves scenes of crime to ensure that initial investigations are efficient and effective.
  • Providing an efficient and effective specialist dog handling services, in support of Police operations, as determined by need and in accordance with best practice.
  • The training and care for dogs and ensures that kennels, equipment and vehicles are maintained to the highest of standards.

The successful applicant will have experience of the following areas:

  • Is of the Rank of Constable and has successfully completed a 2-year probationary period.
  • Must pass the initial Dog Handler course.
  • Possesses well-developed communication and interpersonal skills in order to communicate at all levels both inside and outside the organisation.
  • Well-developed listening and questioning techniques.
  • The ability to prepare well balanced reports in a concise and logical manner.
  • Experience in working in high pressurised and often dangerous situations.
  • Able to work efficiently alone but excel as part of a team.

Successful applicants will be invited to sit a written exam, followed by suitability course in July, and if successful, will then attend the initial GP course, which will run for 12 weeks, (September until December) – it is essential that you are available for these dates.

Closing dates are not normally extended, other than in exceptional circumstances and an agreement is made with the HR Manager - Recruitment and the Line Manager for the role.
