HMICFRS Inspection Officer - Chief Inspector (Secondment)

Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services

Job description

HMICFRS is an Arm's Length Body (ALB) of the Home Office. We independently monitor, inspect and report on the effectiveness, efficiency and legitimacy of police forces in England and Wales and fire and rescue services in England, as well as the Police Service of Northern Ireland, the National Crime Agency and other national law enforcement agencies.

We are independent of the government, police and fire and rescue services. We produce major reports which shine a light on issues at the very heart of policing and have recently been given responsibility for inspecting fire and rescue services. Our reports are widely covered by the media and help inform the public of the performance of their local police forces. In 2018, our first reports on fire and rescue services will be published.

We are seeking to recruit up to 7 general Inspection Officers, including child protection Inspection Officers on a secondment or Civil Service Loan for up to 1 year, with a possible extension to 2 years, to be part of the team responsible for carrying out these inspections.

Working as an inspection officer with HMICFRS puts you at the heart of inspection activity. You will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of inspection processes whilst working alongside staff from across HMICFRS and the police service. It will provide you with the opportunity to gain an in-depth insight into how the police service is run, building your skills and experience in a way which could prove invaluable to your future career. You will also be contributing the overall safety and efficiency of our police services, making observations and creating reports which could lead to vital changes.

We are looking for talented individuals who have the drive, enthusiasm and skills to be part of this new inspection program. You will need to be inquisitive and have the ability to assess data and performance objectively. You will be expected to form constructive relationships that will enable you to work closely with those we inspect, providing challenge, and identifying areas for improvement and to share best practice. If you are passionate about having a positive impact on how our police services are run, we want to hear from you.
