Role Purpose:

To investigate matters referred to the Professional Standards Department as directed by the PSD Management team , including public complaints, internal discipline enquiries and criminal allegations.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Receives case files from the Senior Investigating Officer and familiarises self with the contents to ensure a full understanding of each case before the investigation commences.
  • Contacts complainants and provides advice on the discipline and complaints procedure and establishes the exact nature of the complaint; checking information against any case documentation to identify any inconsistencies.
  • Reviews complaints/conduct matters and advises on whether a case should be dealt with by Practice requiring improvement (PRI) or by proportionate investigation having regard to all of the circumstances, the gravity of the alleged offending/conduct ensuring thereby efficient case management and expeditious investigations.
  • In cases of formal investigations , held within PSD gathers all evidence including witness, physical and forensic evidence ensuring that exhibits are correctly packaged / labelled and that continuity is maintained.
  • Conducts tape recorded interviews with Police officers/Police Staff under investigation acting as either the principal or second interviewer and complies with the PACE ,CPIA etc at all times to ensure that the integrity of the case is maintained
  • Submits reports and files to the Senior Investigating Officer ensuring that such correspondence is of a high standard and is structured in the expected format.
  • Acts as the liaison officer for discipline matters when officers outside of the department are conducting a conduct or criminal enquiry. And when requested provides advice to officers at Commands and units/departments on policy and procedures in relation to discipline.
  • Attends Humberside Police training courses to deliver presentations on the Professional      Standards Department and conduct issues.
  • Maintains a position on the On Call PSD rota.
  • Presents cases at Misconduct meetings and hearings where appropriate.



Skills and experience:

  • Be a PC and have completed a successful 75 week probationary period.
  • Has knowledge of Police activities and maintains an awareness of current policing issues.
  • Significant recent experience of conducting sensitive investigations and working in a confidential environment.
  • Has criminal interview experience and is willing to be trained up to Tier 2 level in investigative interviewing.
