Police  Hostage/Crisis Negotiator

The role of the Police Negotiator plays a vital part in daily activity of our Operational business.

There are 14 negotiators force wide in total with 2 always on call available 24/7, 365 days a year who are trained to do this on top of their everyday role. Police Negotiators, who are Sergeants and above, are volunteers, deployed to jobs where a victim or suspect is in a situation where they are likely to harm themselves or others around them such as:

  • Suicide interventions
  • High risk MISPERS
  • Domestic Sieges
  • Firearms support

The main qualities that a Negotiator must possess is the ability to establish rapport, understand the situation of the victim/suspect, talk them through the processes and help them see a pathway or consider alternative options.

Expressions of interest are sought from those of the minimum rank of Sergeant or above either substantive in post or those within the promotion pool for this challenging role.

Following this there will be a short written assessment which if meets the required standard will be followed by an interview together with a practical role playing exercise. The deadline for the submission of expressions of interest is Friday 29th September 2017 at 12 noon.

This role is open to Substantive sergeants as well as those going through the current Sergeants promotion process.   However, attendance on a National Negotiators course will be dependent on them being successful at the Board.

The successful candidates must attend a 2 week National course which is a pass/fail and accept that this is an "on call" rota and be willing to commit to a minimum of 5  years’ service in role.
