 CURRENT AND PROJECTED VACANCIES – CONSTABLES – AUTHORISED FIREARMS OFFICERS (AFO’S) – JOINT SPECIALIST OPERATIONS UNIT

Constable – JSOU AFO (Operations Complex, Sheffield)

Applications are sought from substantive Constables to become Authorised Firearms Officers who need to be:

  • Sound decision makers, especially when under pressure
  • Able to negotiate in challenging situations
  • Effective at diffusing situations
  • Good listeners
  • Able communicators

To perform the function of Authorised Firearms Officer in support of spontaneous and pre-planned firearms incidents. To provide appropriate support to districts to enable them to achieve both force and local priorities. To maintain operational currency and competency and to adhere to Authorised Professional Practice. The role of a firearms officer both locally and nationally continues to evolve in order to effectively tackle both serious and organised crime and terrorism.

Role/Recruitment Expectations

Satisfactory completion of probationary period

Ability to complete the initial firearms course

Ability to pass advanced driving course

Ability and willingness to attend tac advisors course

Potential to complete basic method of entry course

Experience of completing self-generated work and initiatives

Ability to pass arv fitness test and ohu medical

Achieve and maintain fitness level required to pass the firearms fitness test as required

Be prepared to work full 24/7 shifts and flexible hours at short notice according to the demands of the role

The selection process will consist of a number of stages, which are outlined below:

a.      Submission of the Firearms Application Form (suitability for firearms training).

b.      Paper sift in line with the PPF role profile and guidance notes.

c.      Vetting by PSD – may be undertaken at any time during the process but it is anticipated that this will occur prior to the Firearms Assessment selection days.

d.      Completion of the CoP ARV fitness test to the standard required for AFO’s (level 9.4). This test must be passed prior to the Firearms Assessment selection days. Candidates will be notified following the paper sift of their requirement to undertake this test.  Dates on which the tests will be taken by candidates are 10th May @ 1pm, 12th May @ 1pm, 16th May @ 9am, 18th May @ 1pm, 24th May @ 1pm & 26th May @ 1pm, all sessions will be held at Robert Dyson House.  On successful completion of the fitness test, candidates will be given instructions how to book onto the Firearms Assessment Selection days.

e.      Firearms Assessment Selection Days  - Practical scenarios and Shooting assessment (candidates to be available on one of 8/6, 26/6, 3/7 for Practical Scenarios. Successful candidates from this process to be available for shooting assessments on 13/7, 15/7 or 17/7).  These will be allocated on a strictly first come first served basis.

f.        Successful candidates from the Assessment Days will be entered into a hierarchical matrix, their position on the matrix being determined by their scores on the assessment days.  IFC courses will be allocated based on the position of candidates in this matrix.  Successful candidates will receive details of IFC course offers in early August.

g.      OHU Medical examination and Doctor report– hearing, sight and general physical assessment

h.      Check of disciplinary record, personal record, and approval for further assessment by ACC

i.         Successful completion of the Firearms Initial Course.  This requires fulltime attendance for the 12 week course, the dates of the current courses are as below

IFC 3 – 25th Sept 2017 to 19th Dec 2017

IFC 4 – 2nd Jan 2018 to 26th Mar 2018.

*Candidates MUST be available for all the dates required to complete the process.  The dates identified for the fitness test and assessment process are a finite list which will not be added to.

Joint Specialist Operations Unit (AFOs) is under-represented by female and ethnic minority officers and applications are particularly welcome from these officers, however please note that success will solely be based on merit.

Consideration can be given to more flexible working arrangements, if required, on successful completion of the IFC course.

Candidates should be aware that the Firearms Support Group is currently based at the Operations Complex, Europa Link in South Yorkshire and Melton in Humberside, current vacancies are for positions at the South Yorkshire base.

Upon successful completion of the Initial Firearms Course individuals will remain in their current roles until vacancies arise in the JSOU

Due to the specialist nature of the role and the extensive training and development involved a MINIMUM commitment of FIVE years is expected
