This is an exciting and unique opportunity to be part of a team who are based within the Doncaster District and who focus on crime committed within South Yorkshire Prisons. South Yorkshire’s Prison Crime Unit have an excellent relationship with the prisons in our area and this role is to contribute and participate in our continuing support to them.

The successful applicant will conduct and manage investigations and submit case files to enable prosecutions. As an Investigating Officer you will provide support and ongoing partnership working throughout the investigative process. You will work as part of a team and provide support to colleagues.

Ideally, you will be PIP level 2 qualified or equivalent, and you will have knowledge and understanding of College of Police guidance for Investigations.

Some of the key responsibilities for the role are:

  • Appropriately manage investigations into criminality.
  • Ensure that safeguarding is undertaken and achieved with victims.
  • Operate appropriate SYP and external computer systems to research, gather intelligence and maintain records regarding individuals and investigations
  • Conduct investigations in prison; make victim enquiries; preserve and recover evidence.
  • Systematically seek, gather, evaluate, and present evidence as part of investigations including cyber digital investigation.
  • Use appropriate interview techniques e.g., comply with legal provisions for interviewing vulnerable persons / DVD and/or taped records
  • Search individual(s) or personal property.
  • Prepare investigation reports and case files.

Skills and experience:

  • Able to undertake training to achieve Professionalising Investigation Programme (PIP) level 1
  • Good communication skills with the ability to listen, empathise, provide support, and adapt language, form, and message to meet the needs of different people/audiences.
  • Able to break down a complex problem into component parts and determine appropriate action.
  • Able to utilise IT packages, systems and/or databases.
  • Able to produce clear and concise reports and other documents within best practice procedures.

Eligibility:

Applicants must meet the minimum requirement checkable history criteria, which must be taken into account for individuals applying to work with South Yorkshire Police in any capacity.  A minimum checkable history of 5 years is required for this role and successfully undergoing recruitment vetting procedure is a pre-requisite of employment with South Yorkshire Police.
