Key Accountabilities:

  • Manage the day-to-day running of the TSU Department, including the assessment of requests for operational requirements force wide, including volume crime and serious crime and to allocate resources accordingly.
  • Manage the workloads and the development of the technical support unit technicians including the supervision, recruitment, welfare, appraisals and training of staff and the management of the ‘on call’ rota ensuring the briefing site is updated accordingly.
  • Manage Health & Safety within the team and conduct regular workplace inspections and risk assessments including, operational risk assessments, as well as work place activity risk assessments, ensuring they meet the legal obligations of IEE Regulations, PUWER 1998 and COSHH Regulations 2002.
  • Manage the TSU budget to ensure resources are used within budgetary constraints including developing and providing recommendations for expenditure in line with Force requirements and objectives.
  • Management of the procurement of technical equipment, liaising with regional forces for the purchase of technical equipment.
  • Evaluate the cost and requirements of force projects to meet operational demand including the planning and deployment of equipment for large scale, complex installations and the research, design and presentation of the project.
  • Responsible for the TSU credit card expenditure, for the use of urgent operational needs and purchase of consumables.
  • Research, design and implement new technology / equipment to meet the requirements of South Yorkshire Police.
  • Management of the TSU inventory and technical equipment, including the maintenance of the Charter System, the disposal of equipment, and ensuring equipment is ready for deployment at short notice.
  • Manage the TSU module of the Charter System ensuring compliance with OSC guidelines.
  • Represent South Yorkshire Police at regional meetings and national meetings and events related to the Technical Support Unit and attend various meetings at all levels within force to provide advice and offer support where possible.

Prior education and experience & skills:

  • Electronic or Electrical qualification - HNC or HND.
  • Prince 11 of Project Management qualification.
  • Significant experience of working within a technical discipline.
  • Willing to work towards or holds the IOSH qualification
  • Holder of a current driving licence and must be able to pass a police-driving test in a police vehicle where required.
  • Working knowledge of Health and Safety
  • As part of this role the wearing of Personal Issue Body Armour will be required on some occasions.
  • Able to communicate logical arguments clearly, adapting language, form and message to meet the needs of different people/audiences.
  • Ability to empathise and support others and work with a range of stakeholders to understand their needs and concerns.
  • Able to identify cause and effect when problem solving and develop a course of action designed to target root causes and mitigate risks.
  • Able to develop and motivate a team and create strong engagement of individuals with their personal and team objectives and with Force values, behaviours and strategic priorities.
  • Able to plan ahead; to allocate work appropriately within the team and to identify and mitigate risks to delivery.
  • Able to write clear and concise reports or other documents.

 

The successful candidate would be predominantly working day shifts Monday to Friday.

Applicants must meet the minimum requirement checkable history criteria, which must be taken into account for individuals applying to work with South Yorkshire Police in any capacity.  A minimum checkable history of 5 years is required for this role and successfully undergoing recruitment vetting procedure is a pre-requisite of employment with South Yorkshire Police.
